Why being nerdy is the new black

Hi people 🤓

Today I want to talk to you about something I really think is important: being nerdy

nerdy nerds geeks geek tech

Ok, you can see what nerdy means by definition, even though we probably all know what that means. I bet 80% of you guys have called somebody you know or even yourself a nerd. I’ve given this a lot of thought lately: Why is it we’ve culturally associated people that know a lot about one area with being uncool? Yeah, the typical “nerd” might be socially awkward but in the end – we kind of think that knowing a lot is uncool. How is that?

As you may or may not know, I’ve really gotten into tech. I don’t have a background in Computer Science nor did I have a personal interest in it until approximately a year ago. In fact, I have a BSc. in Economics and Business Management, so I wasn’t exactly exposed to anything related to IT (except for Matlab). But let me tell you, I surely am now. And the more I learn, the more I think that people, who know a lot in this area are freaking amazing?! No joke: I watch YouTube videos of 9-year-old programmers thinking that they have such a bright future in front of them. But I get a little whole in my stomach when I think about the fact that there might be a slight chance of them being bullied by other school mates because of knowing something other kids are not mature enough to understand yet. So what if they are different? So what if they would rather program in their free time than play sports? Do we have to hate on them because our own subjective opinion holds that playing football is cooler than building an app? (And besides, is it really? 😅🤔).

I can’t tell you how much it inspires me to think about that there are people in this world that have the capability to deal with complex IT problems. You know, none of the stuff you are using would be possible without those brainies – there wouldn’t be any WhatsApp or Shazaam or the Internet in general (or maaaaany more things) if it wasn’t for these crazy people we call nerds.

If you are still in school and can think of someone in your class that might be a little bit of an outcast because of this exact thing, go talk to them. Try to become friends because honestly, you can probably learn a lot from each other. Open your mind!

Now I know that I’ve based this post on tech knowledge but it can really be applied to anything – whether you know a lot about physics, law, business or whatever. And if there is something I want you to think about before going to sleep tonight it’s these 2 things:

  • Always be nice to people
  • Learn as much as possible and don’t let people hate on your knowledge. Be proud of yourself! The earlier you can start learning, the better it is for you.

Also: I’m not saying that the stereotypical nerd is always socially awkward. You might be a super genius and have people skills as well, if you do – there is nothing that can stop you my friend, you are a God. 😂

I would be proud to call myself a nerd because they are freaking awesome!

That was it from me today, I hope this post encourages you to think about this topic. Thanks for stopping by!

Blog to you soon!

Love, M.
